REST IT: Your thermostat that is. In the winter, set your thermostat at 50 degrees while you’re away to keep appliances and pipes from freezing. Even though freezing is rarely an issue in Florida, it can still happen from time to time. During the summer months, you can set your thermostat as high as 90 degrees — as long as you aren’t leaving any furry friends behind in your home while you travel.
UNPLUG IT: Electronics and appliances are energy vampires and just keeping them plugged in can cost you money. Do a walk through of your home and unplug everything you can before you leave. Even small electronics like coffee pots and digital clocks are a drain. (Bonus: Unplugging everything also eliminates a possible fire hazard!)
AUTOMATE IT: It’s understandable to want to leave lights on to deter would be burglars, but leaving lights on all the time is a big waste of energy. Consider placing lights on a timer, so they turn on and off at a set time. You can save energy and still make it look like you are home.
USE THE ‘VACATION’ SETTING: Does your water heater have a ‘vacation’ setting? If you’re going to be gone more than a day or two, consider turning down your water heater.
